Pumpkin Ribbon Hair Clip by The Casual Craftlete

My daughter who is 2 loves all kinds of accessories, especially ones for her hair.  I have brought her TONS of hair bows from Esty, but never made my own.  So, this was my first attempt at making a hair clip.  It was much easier than what I thought.

I have A LOT of ribbon in my scrapbooking stash, so I just used Halloween colored ribbon that I already had.  I wanted to make a ‘modern’ pumpkin hair clip using black and orange ribbon.

Here is what I used to make this cute modern Pumpkin Ribbon Hair Clip:

  • Ribbon (2 different patterns)
  • Alligator hair clip
  • Glue gun
  • Wooden dowel rod
  • Lighter

First I started by making the corkscrew ribbon for the stem of the pumpkin.  I spiraled black ribbon around a 3/8″ wood dowel rod.  I secured the ribbon with clothes pins on each end of the rod.  Then I placed the ribbon in the oven at 375 degree oven for 20 to 25 minutes.  *I had to cut the rod for it to fit inside where the wire racks sit.

Using the same black ribbon I cut a small piece and glued it to the metal alligator clip.  I left a small edge on both sides and tucked those inside the clip and glued them down as well.  Then I cut a small piece of the corkscrew ribbon and glued it to the covered clip.

To make the pumpkin I used orange with black polka dot ribbon.  I made a small loop and used my hot glue gun to hold the loop in place.  Using the same piece of ribbon I made a large loop around the smaller loop and glued the ribbon.

I then wrapped the ribbon around the inside of both loops and glued it.  The last step was to hot glue the pumpkin to the clip.

Isn’t this hair clip super cute?!  I LOVED how it turned out.  Not to bad for my first attempt.

* If you are using ribbon made of a synthetic material, make sure to use a lighter at every end of cut.  This will prevent the ribbon from fraying.

Love it! I just bought my daughter one from a pricey etsy shop, but this looks so easy and so much cheaper. Where do you find the blank alligator clips to start with?

Hi Jill! This hair clip was SO easy to make! I bought a packet of alligator clips at Hobby Lobby. They were very cheap. I am going to start making my own bows because your right, they can get pricey on Etsy. Thanks for stopping by. Have a wonderful day!

You are so clever, I never would have thought to heat the ribbon to make it into a corkscrew. Hope you have a great day!

Thanks Heidi! It’s weird that you ‘bake’ ribbon to make a corkscrew bow. It’s really easy though. Thanks for stopping by! Have a great day!
