Create your own Oh Holy Night Twinkle Light Canvas for a beautiful Christmas display. This DIY lighted canvas really shines at night.

Twinkle Light Canvas

Hello there! Today I am so excited to share my Oh Holy Night Twinkle Light Canvas. Oh Holy Night is my all time favorite Christmas song, so I wanted to turn it into a twinkle light canvas to display in my home this year. I just love the dark blue paint color that makes the white lettering really pop. And the twinkle lights really glow at night.

Materials:  (May contain affiliate links.  Thanks for supporting The Casual Craftlete!)

  • 11 inch by 14 inch Stretched Canvas
  • Americana Acrylics – Deep Midnight Blue – 2 oz
  • Oh Holy Night silhouette cut file
  • Electronic cutting machine
  • White self-adhesive vinyl
  • Weeding tool
  • Transfer paper
  • X-acto knife
  • Battery operated mini string light – white
  • Paint brush
  • Hot glue gun

Instructions:

Oh Holy Night Cut File Picture

First, you need to download the Oh Holy Night design HERE (PERSONAL USE ONLY).  Next, you need to open the file in Silhouette Studio using the open button.  Resize the image.  I made the design 10″ x 11″.  You can easily resize the cutfile using the “scale” button on the top right of the Silhouette Studio window.  Using the white vinyl, cut out the design.

How to make a twinkle light canvas

I applied a piece of transfer paper tape on top of the Oh Holy Night vinyl cut out stencil and set it aside.

DecoArt Acrylic Paint in Deep Midnight Blue

I applied two coats of Americana Acrylic in Deep Midnight Blue.  Once the paint was completely dry, I removed the paper backing from the vinyl and gently placed the stencil on the center of the canvas.  Once I was happy with the placement, I used a popsicle stick to gently go over the transfer paper.  You could also use a bone file.  Just make sure to firmly press down so the design adheres to the canvas, then gently remove the transfer paper.

How to add lights to a canvas

I found these starry lights battery led light set in the dollar section at Target and thought they would be perfect for the wintry night sky of this project.  I used the X-acto knife to make a small oval that was about the size of the light in random areas on the canvas.  I quickly touched up any unpainted areas around the cuts and let the paint dry.  I then pushed the lights through the holes and hot glued them in place to secure them.  These bulbs are more oval and don’t stick straight out of the canvas.

How to add twinkle lights to canvas

If you can not find starry lights like the ones I used, you can use regular white Christmas light.  I made a similar lighted canvas using regular lights and you can see the tutorial here.

[…] To make the vase a luminary, I placed a string of starry lights inside the vase.  I bought the light set from the Target Dollar Spot for $3.  You will need to buy batteries separately.  I used this same set last year for my Oh Holy Night Twinkle Light Canvas. […]
