DIY Monogram Wood Plaque with pom-pom garland

DIY Monogram Wood Plaque

So, the inspiration behind this Monogram Wood Plaque came from yarn of all things.  I was browsing the clearance binds at Michael’s after Christmas and stumbled upon some gorgeous gray and cream wool yarn.  Let’s be honest, I have never worked with yarn a day in my life but I fell in love.  It may have been that I was freezing in Chicago and the wool looked nice and cozy or, I just love pretty things and so I had to buy them.

The first and probably the easiest craft that came to mind was yarn pom-poms.  Then I remembered that we have some scrap wood left over from our porch makeover from the summer and it just kind of evolved from there.  When It comes to crafts I have a pretty good imagination but when it comes to anything else, forget it!

Materials:

  • Wood Scraps
  • Paint
  • Paint brushes
  • Sandpaper
  • Scrapbook paper
  • Stencil
  • Mod Podge
  • Yarn
  • Pom-Pom maker
  • Staple gun
  • Scissors

Step 1:  I had my husband find a piece of 2 x 12 board out in the yard pile.  Bless his heart, he had to dig through the ice and snow to find one.  Since it has been sitting there awhile it was grayed…perfect!  There are knots in the board but I love the natural rustic feel.  He measured and cut the board at 11” x 12” using a power saw.  Sorry, I don’t mess with scary tools!

Step 2:  We painted the front and sides of the board with Olympic flat white latex-based paint.  I watered down to paint to about 2 parts water and one part paint so the finish would be transparent enough to let the grain of the wood show through.  I didn’t want the wood board to be too white so we just did two coats of paint but you can do as many as you need to get your desired color.  I like the gray color showing through.  After the paint dried, I took a piece of sandpaper and rough up the edges a bit for a rustic look.

Using sandpaper on painted wood for a rustic look

Step 3:  I found a monogram E on the Internet, downloaded it and pasted it into Word.  Then made the size 6″ x 7 1/2″. I just printed the monogram on gray scrapbook paper and cut it out with scissors.

Step 4:  I brushed on Mod Podge to the back of the monogram and placed it on the board.  Then I brushed some more Mod Podge over the top of the monogram and let dry.

How to use Mod Podge on wood projects

Step 5:  Using the inspirational yarn I found, I made a super cute pom-pom garland.  I used this pom-pom maker.  I made three small solid gray pom-poms and two gray and cream medium ones.  I attached the garland to the back of the board using a staple gun, well my husband did that part too.

You can sit in on a shelf but I think I am going to add a hanging bracket to the back and hang it on the wall.

I am SO happy the way this project turned out!  This plaque exceeded my expectations times a hundred.  I love the monochromatic colors!  So soft and subtle.  I’m not a big fan of bright colors.  Most would say I’m boring but I say I’m classic.

What do you think?  Would you make a wood plaque for your home?

I love the weathered color of the wood after you painted it, it’s so pretty! I used a jig saw over the weekend for the first time and am trying to ease my way into using power tools. I want to know how to use them and feel comfortable {they scare me too, haha}, plus the hubs enjoys playing with them anyway ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks for sharing at The Makers and we hope you will join us again next week!
