Run

Running

This past Wednesday I ran my fastest mile to date!  Oh Yea…I really can’t believe.  I’m still a little in shock.

I have been wanting to try and run a fast mile for a bit now.  The last time I tried to run a quick mile was on June 6.  Well, I bet that time by 7 seconds.  Not a huge jump in pace, but I’ll take it.

This run was a last minute decision.  I was on my way from my parents house and thought I would call up a friend to see if she wanted to meet me at our local high school track.  It was already late in the evening, so I thought maybe a mile would be a good run.  Get some miles in and chat with a friend.  Well, she was up for it.  We meet at the track and thought, let’s just see how fast we can do a mile.  Now, my friend is a lot faster than I am so she said she would do all the talking and let me focus on the running.

We started out really strong running at 9:00.  I thought to myself, I really think I can do this.  First lap around was great.  My friend was talking helping me keep my mind off the running.  Second lap was pretty good too.  We were running around 9:30.  The third lap was rough.  I slowed down a bit to 10:00.  I was getting tired.  The we entered the fourth and final lap and I just kick it into gear.  Running under 9:00.  We finished strong!  I thought I was going to die.  I did it…9:33!

I haven’t really been too motivated to run lately, so my times just aren’t improving.  In fact they’ve been getting worse.  I’m sure a lot of it has to do with it being summer time and its hot and humid.  So far this month I have only ran 15 miles.

I have two 5 K races in September and need to get focused!  I think doing one speed workout a week may help my time get better and keep me motivated to log more miles.

What tips do you have for speed workouts?
