DIY Elastic Band Notebook

Craft· Handmade Gifts· Paper

DIY Elastic Band Notebook by www.thecasualcraftlete.comHey there!  Today I am sharing the most amazing DIY project.  I love my new DIY Elastic Band Notebook!  If you don’t know, I love anything paper and office supply related.  I have too many notebooks and paper pads to count.  One day I was using my Rifle Paper Co. Botanical Notebook and got the idea to add an elastic band closure to it.  The closures are very handy and this one is super easy to make.  Doesn’t it look fabulous?!

MaterialsMATERIALS:

  • Cutting mat
  • Ruler
  • Elastic (I used pre-made 16″ headbands from the craft store)
  • Pencil
  • Xacto-knife
  • Scissors
  • Hole punch
  • Large eyelet kit
  • Hammer
  • Notebooks

How to make an elastic band closure notebookOpen up your notebook to the back cover.  With a ruler and pencil, mark one inch from the top and one inch from the side of the notebook.  Do this step on both the upper and lower right inside of the back cover.

How to make an elastic band closure notebook by www.thecasualcraftlete.comWhere you have made the pencil marks, use a hole punch to punch the holes for the eyelets.  My punch wasn’t big enough, so I had to adjust by making slight punches to the initial punch.  Once you have made your hole punches, place the bottom eyelet through the holes with the plastic washer underneath the eyelet.

Easy to make elastic band closure notebookIf you are using a headband like I did, you want to cut it in half.  Take one end of the elastic band and cut a small slit about half an inch from the end.  Then pull the band over the eyelet where you cut the hole.  Don’t worry about the rough edges.  The eyelet will cover it up.

Use eyelets to create an elastic band closure notebookFollowing the instructions on the large eyelet kit, place the cover eyelet on top.  You should have a plastic washer under the eyelet as well as a metal tool on top.  Use a small craft hammer to gently set the eyelet.

Easy DIY Elastic Band Closure NotebookOnce the eyelet is set on the top right of the notebook, close the notebook and pull the elastic band over the front cover.  You want the band to be tight but not too tight to where it pulls on the notebook.  Then repeat the process to set the eyelet on the bottom of the back cover.  Cut any extra of the elastic band  with scissors.

Back cover of the DIY Elastic Band NotebookHere is what the back of the notebook should look like.  You should only see the eyelets and none of the elastic band.

It really is very easy and quick to make an elastic band closure for any notebook.  Adding a closure is really handy and can customize a look for favorite notebooks.

Thank you for this tutorial. I also love notebooks and have many. This is a great idea because often my notebook opens in my bag and all the pages get wrinkled. I will try it!

What a great idea! I keep a notebook in my purse and it’s constantly getting stuck on other things so this would be the perfect solution without having to go out and buy a new one.

What a clever idea! I also think if you wanted extra storage,
you could glue a piece of tag board(decorated or printed )
over the grommets too as a pouch.
