Old Fashion Doughnuts

This Old Fashion Doughnut recipe has been passed down from my Great Great Grandma Maggie. I mean who doesn’t love doughnuts?! They are melt in mouth, soft and chewy little pillows of heaven. For a recipe to be handed down five generations, that means it’s a keeper!  I always knew having a sweet tooth ran in the family.

My mom has been doing some research into the family history, mainly on my grandpa’s side.  She has found an old fabric covered book that was bought over from Scotland by Maggie and her family.  The pictures are so old, some of them are made from tin.  The best part is finding this gem of a recipe.

How to make old fashion doughnuts

This recipe is a labor of love.  Not that the doughnuts are hard to make.  In fact they are very easy.  It just takes awhile for the dough to rise.  So, in the mean time you can sit back relax put your feet up and enjoy the aroma coming from the kitchen.  Or in my case, picking up  my daughter’s mess.  She really enjoys helping me cook but is quite messy.

Old Fashion Doughnuts

Ingredients
  • 2 packets of yeast
  • 1 cup lukewarm warm water
  • 1 cup lukewarm milk
  • ½ cup butter
  • ⅔ cup sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 eggs well beaten
  • ⅛ tsp grated nutmeg
  • 7 cups of sifted flour
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Cinnamon sugar mixture (1/2 cup sugar and 1 tbsp cinnnamon)
Instructions
  1. Pour lukewarm water over yeast, stir and let stand for 10 mins.
  2. Heat milk in the microwave for 30 to 45 secs and let sit.
  3. In the bowl of a stand mixer cream together the butter, salt and sugar. Add beaten eggs and nutmeg.
  4. In a separate bowl, pour the milk into the soften yeast and blend liquid mixture with 2 cups of flour.
  5. Then add the milk and flour mixture into the stand mixer with egg mixture. Beat until everything is well combined. Add enough flour until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
  6. Pour the dough onto a floured surface and knead for just a couple of minutes. Let dough rise until double (about 2 hours)
  7. Roll the dough out on a floured surface until about ⅓ inch thick. Use a donut cutter to cut donuts (I used a biscuit cutter and the cap from a milk jug to make the holes) Let rise for the second time until doubled.
  8. Add to a pot of 375 degree oil, just a few donuts at a time so as not to crowd the pan, and fry until golden, about 2 minutes each side.
  9. Drain on a paper towel lined plate before sprinkling the cinnamon and sugar mixture.
  10. Serve immediately.

These doughnuts are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and they kind of taste like a funnel cake from the state fair.  They are best served warm with a big ol’ glass of milk. YUM!

*This recipe makes about 4 dozen doughnuts.  You can freeze half of the dough up to one month if you don’t want to make the whole batch.
