Ruffled Crepe Paper Tags by The Casual CraftleteHello lovelies!  Today I am SO excited to share how to make these darling Ruffled Crepe Paper Tags!  I just love all things ruffly and girly.  Oh, and paper too.  These tags are super easy to make.  All you need is a couple different colors of crepe paper, mailing tags and a sewing machine.  They are the perfect topper for presents and packages.  I used Valentine’s Day colors, well, because they are my favorite!

Sown Ruffle Crepe Paper TagsThis past weekend I got together with one of my favorite people to make these cute tags.  We had pink tea and brownies when we made them.  Aren’t we super girly and fun.  HA!  Anyway, my friend actually did the sewing of the tags.  She was my model for the day so I could take pictures of the work in progress.

Here are the materials we used to make the ruffled crepe paper tags:

  • Crepe paper
  • Mailing tags
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • White sewing thread
  • Sewing machine

Crepe PaperFirst start by cutting your crepe paper.  The small tags are 3-3/4 x 1-7/8 inches.  I cut the crepe paper in 5 inch pieces.  When the crepe paper is sewn and ruffled, it gets smaller.

How to make ruffled crepe paper tagsThe next step is totally up to you.  The best looking tags I think have 3 pieces of crepe paper.  For the tag above, we used 2 pieces of red and 1 piece of white.  Overlap the 2 pieces of red by about half an inch.  Then lay the piece of white crepe paper in the middle of the 2 red pieces.  We also found it easier when sewing to pin both the bottom and top of the paper together. This will hold the crepe paper in place while sewing.

Sewing Crepe PaperTo set up your sewing machine, you want to make sure your machine is set on the longest stitch and strongest tension.  Place the pinned crepe paper pieces under the needle.  Make sure to remove the pin from the top before you start sewing.

Add extra tension when sewing crepe paper by hold the threadTo add even more tension, hold the thread tightly when your hand.  This is what gives the crepe paper it’s ruffles.  Sew down the middle of the paper.  When you get to the bottom, make sure to remove the pin.  Back stitch to secure the thread.

Sewn Ruffle Crepe PaperThis is what the crepe paper looks like after you are done sewing.

Mailing TagsNext, we attached the ruffled crepe paper to plain mailing tags.

Sewing Crepe Paper TagsPlace the ruffled crepe paper in the middle of the tag.  Sew carefully down the thread line on the crepe paper.  Back stitch both the top and bottom this time.  *You do NOT need to hold the spool of thread for this step.

Ruffled Crepe Paper TagsThe ruffled crepe paper tags are done.  All you need to do is trim the thread.

Adorable Ruffled Crepe Paper TagsThese tags are cute on packages, gift boxes and bags.

I love these! My co-worker’s mother recently passed away, and she gave me her mother’s sewing machine. I’ve never had a sewing machine before. I want to use it but am intimidated. Something like this might be a good little project to try.

Ahhh, this brought back memories. When I was little my Nan made long crepe paper garlands like this which we put up instead of paper chains all round the room at Christmas. We used to twist them as they looped up. Then we would spend ages in January rolling them back up neatly for next year. They must have lasted 10 years! I love the idea to use little short lengths like this – such a clever idea.
